Anatomy of a Quote

Find out what's involved

What goes into producing a quote? Most custom tube bending, tube laser cutting or related work typically begins with a request for quote. This first step allows us as the manufacturer to gather key information about the project requirements so that we can provide the most accurate pricing and delivery lead time. Here are the most common things we need in order to review a job and issue a quote:

  1. Parts drawing. Each project is different. So, along with the project specs, we typically need to review your CAD drawing. Supplying the corresponding PDF is also helpful.
  2. Material specs. As each quote includes the cost of the material, knowing the exact type of metal needed helps us to quickly obtain quotes for the job.
  3. Outside diameter. The OD is the size of the cross section of the pipe or tube. Our tube bending and laser cutting capability is for material between 0.25-inch and 6-inch OD.
  4. Wall thickness. Knowing the wall thickness of the material – along with the outside diameter of the tube or pipe – will impact what tooling will be needed.
  5. Degree of bend. This refers to the angle, expressed in degrees, to which the bend will be formed (e.g. 45, 90, 180 degrees). You may see this abbreviated as DOB.
  6. Tolerances. There will be instances where a tight tolerance is required. This should be advised at the time of the quote, and can normally be achieved.
  7. Center line radius. One of the most common measurements in tube bending, this is the radius to the centerline of the pipe or tube to be bent. In most cases, the tightest achievable center line radius is one times the pipe or tube’s outer diameter.
  8. Quantities needed. With this, we can properly quote raw material costs and determine the production timeline.
  9. Application or end-use. Knowing how the part will eventually be used is important to us as it may help to guide the manufacturing process.
